ART & SCULPTURES

Public Art at The Falls

When exploring The Falls, keep your eyes peeled for hidden treasures. Public art is placed throughout the area, just waiting to be discovered. Can you find all the art pieces scattered around The Falls?

Monarch of the plains sculpture

Monarch of the Plains

This granite sculpture of a resting bison was created by Darold Bailey in 1999. The City of Sioux Falls acquired it 2000, and it was the first sculpture placed at Falls Park. Next time you’re at The Falls, see if you can spot the artist’s signature on it.

Arc of Dreams on the River Greenway

Arc of Dreams

From the inspiration of a single blade of prairie grass came the engineering and design marvel of the Arc of Dreams by Dale Lamphere. Soaring 300 feet across the Big Sioux River, this awe-inspiring piece is a tribute to dreamers—past and present—and ignites the imagination of future dreamers. The 15-foot gap in the center symbolizes the leap of faith every dreamer must take. Make sure to stop and see this architectural wonder at night when it lights up the sky.

Near The Falls

You’ll find some remarkable (and rare) art just steps away from the Falls. Take a short walk along the recreation trail to Fawick Park and view a rare cast of Michelangelo’s iconic David. Then, continue your stroll down Phillips Avenue to experience the renowned SculptureWalk.

Want to meet a real icon? Stop by Fawick Park and say hello to David. Standing 18 feet tall and weighing over 7,000 pounds, he’s been turning heads since day one (for more reasons than one). Felix DeWeldon cast this full-size bronze replica for former Sioux Falls resident and inventor Thomas Fawick.

Each year, SculptureWalk brings “Art to the People” by installing sculptures throughout downtown. It’s kind of a big deal. It’s the largest annual exhibit of public sculptures in the world. Each year brings a new collection of sculptures to discover. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy world-class art while exploring and strolling downtown. Find your favorite and vote for the People’s Choice Award.
